In the 1980s, Carl Plansky often made his own colors for himself and his fellow artists to use. Although the owner had no intention of doing business, the need for Carl's paints from friends caused the Williamsburg color company to be born.
Since then, Williamsburg oil paint has always been handcrafted in small quantities so that the company can ensure the best quality for each tube of color. None of the tubes contain dyes, only pigments ground and mixed with alkaline refined linseed oil. Each batch of color is only 8 gallons (about 36 liters) so that producers can closely control quality, as colorists in France in the late 19th century did.
Each tube of color is labeled with a hand-painted swatch so buyers can see what the dried paint will look like. The color is packaged in non-reactive aluminum tubes, with capacities of 37 ml and 150 ml. If the capacity is larger, the color will be packaged in aluminum cans using only the purest source of materials. Williamsburg handmade oil paint is odorless and has a fairly short drying time. They can be mixed with other oil paints.
